Deswik proud partners of Life-of-Mine conference
The upcoming Life-of-Mine Conference has proven to be the perfect partnership for Deswik, who are proud to be a gold sponsor of the event being held in Brisbane on July 25 to 27.
The biennial conference attracts keynote speakers, presenters, and attendees from diverse, multidisciplinary backgrounds to share examples and case studies that showcase interdisciplinary approaches to solve problems and improve outcomes.
Along with their gold sponsorship, Deswik will have an exhibit where attendees can see the latest software developments in the environment, rehabilitation and mine closure space.
This year’s conference theme focuses on integrated environmental strategy and planning to deliver better outcomes throughout the entire mine lifecycle. There is a particular synergy between this theme and Deswik.Enviro, the company’s new suite of tools that integrate mine production, rehabilitation, and closure planning.
The new tools were developed in response to a need identified at a site project that presented several challenges to traditional planning methods. A solution was developed that provided a 3D visual landform that could design a rehabilitation surface that complied with rehabilitation criteria and provide a high-level landform for the remainder of the site.
To solve the problem, Deswik created a planning process that met land use and environmental objectives while reducing costs. During the testing phase, in comparison with traditional 2D cross-section methods, Deswik’s 3D mathematical modelling solution provided:
- a 7% volume reduction to achieve the same grade constraints;
- reduced planning time from three days to four hours;
- shorter turnaround times for the testing and quantification of multiple rehabilitation landform scenarios; and,
- improved visual output.
Deswik has expanded on the original prototype and incorporated it under the banner of Deswik.Enviro. So far, this features three modules: Landform Engineering, Water Catchment Analysis, and Rehabilitation/Mine Closure Costing & Scheduling.
On Day 1 of the conference, Deswik’s Senior Mining Consultant Ian Neilsen will be discussing a recent Life-of-Mine project and outcomes during his presentation entitled ‘Case Studies for integrating rehabilitation planning with mine planning in strip mining’.
